INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT

Grand Marais Area Tourism Association

The tourism association for the Grand Marais lodging tax district, one of the three associations that make up Visit Cook County. It puts its lodging tax money into marketing, event grants, and the joint Visit Cook County operation. It has no staff of its own; Visit Cook County's staff run its programs.

Not a government board. GMATA is a private 501(c)(6) nonprofit funded by the 3% lodging tax collected in the Grand Marais district, distributed through the County Auditor. It does not publish board minutes or a full current board roster; the members listed are the officers and directors named in its recent IRS Form 990 filings. Its representatives on the Visit Cook County board are Rachelle Christianson, Eric Humphrey, and Dave Tersteeg. The Grand Marais district's 3% lodging tax collections were $494,329.32 in calendar 2025 (Cook County Auditor-Treasurer). GMATA's Form 990 reports total revenue of $712,365 for the year ended April 30, 2026, passed through to the Cook County Visitors Bureau.

Meets: 10:30 a.m. at Visit Cook County
